The HTML Tag

The HTML 'html tag' is the tag that contains all the HTML code. All the HTML elements are contained within this, except for the !Doctype. This HTML element specifies a number of things. Look at the example below:

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">

  • <html> is the opening HTML element,
  • <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" is the attribute of the opening tag
  • <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en"> defines the language of the XML. See xml:lang ="en"> En stands for English.
  • </html> is the closing HTML element.

All other HTML elements are nested between the opening <html> and </html> tags.

Example in Table. HTML is purple and red in this specific tag, the HTML tag.

So do you see what the HTML tag does? It contains all the HTML code within it and is something that every HTML page must have.

Every tutorial that you do, must have this HTML element at the beginning and end of it. Are you ready for some

HTML tutorials, or want to continue learning the Basic HTML tags?
