HTML Meta Tag

The HTML Meta tag is the element that contains information about the data of your HTML page. It could contain information on the author, or on the last time your page was updated. Information useful for the search engines is also placed in the HTML meta tag.

The meta tag is placed in the Head tag, which is at the beginning of typical HTML pages. The Meta tag will only be used once in a HTML page, at the beginning after the opening Head tag and before the closing head tag.

There is a wide variety of tags that fit in between the meta element. There seems to be around 200 meta tags that could be placed between the opening and closing head tag. I will cover some of the most important ones. These are listed below:

  • Description - Contains relevant keywords for search engines
  • Keywords - Contains a relevant description of your page for search engines
  • Author - Contains the author's name
  • Content Type - Defines the content type of your page
  • Robots - Contains instructions for the search engines

To see more simply go to any webpage, and right click on the background and select "View Source" then scroll down to the head section and you will see a wide variety of meta tags.

So can you answer the question 'what is a meta tag?' A HTML meta tag doesn't affect the main look of your site, but it contains information about your page, and it will help search engines find and rank your page.

Every tutorial that you do, must have this Meta element, inside the Head element. Are you ready for some HTML tutorials, or want to continue learning the Basic HTML tags?
